Africa had a good start at the World Championships in Budapest by achieving the Triple in the 10,000m (Men and Women) and winning the Silver medal in the 100m (Men).
Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay (31:27.18), Letesenbet Gidey (31:28.16) and Ejgayehu Taye (31:28.31) led the way by monopolizing the podium in the 10,000m final after a race marked by the fall, 40 m from the finish line, of the Dutchwoman of Ethiopian origin, Hassan who was in the lead.
This success certainly inspired Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei (27:51.42), Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (27:52.60) and Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega (27:52.72) in the men's 10,000m final. Cheptegei also won a third world title.
But it was Letsile Tebogo from Botswana who signed the first sensation of the championships by finishing second on the 100m podium behind America’s Noah Lyles. In 9.83, Noah Lyles achieved the best of the season, while Tebogo (9.88) set a new national record. British Zharnel Hughes (9.88) ranks 3rd. The Jamaican Oblique Seville (9.88) ranks 4th. It was the photo-finish that decided between the three athletes... in favor of the young African. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala ranks 7th in the final with a time of 10''07.
Thus, at the end of the first two days, the African harvest amounts to 2 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze.
