It was on January 17, 1973, on the occasion of the 2nd African Games, that the Constitutive Congress of the Confederation of African Amateur Athletics was held in the Conference Hall of the Institute of International Relations of Nigeria, in Lagos, (CAAA).
The first executive committee was composed of:

President Lamine Diack led this body from 1973 to 2003 which became the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA). Cameroonian Hamad Kalkaba Malboum took over since that date to date.
