The conflict within the Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) has had a happy end thanks to a reconciliation mission sent by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and which stayed in Freetown from 17 to 20 October 2022. The CAA delegation was led by the senior Vice-President, General Jackson Tuwei (Kenya) who was assisted by the Director General, Lamine FATY (Senegal).
Indeed, the crisis had occurred on the aftermath of the federation’s congress which had resulted in the election of Martin Bangura in place of Abdul Karim SESAY as president of the SLAA. The latter then rejected the results of the elections. Faced with this situation, the CAA mediation, managing to bring together the various involved parties, the Ministry of Sports and the National Olympic Committee, allowed reconciliation within the Sierra Leone athletics family.
Thus, Martin Bangura was confirmed as the elected President of SLAA.
