Letsile Tebogo becomes Botswana’s first Olympic champion

Letsile Tebogo made history for Botswana at the Paris 2024 Games on Thursday (8), winning the first Olympic gold medal for his nation in any sport.

Storming to the 200m title, he held off USA’s Kenny Bednarek and 100m champion Noah Lyles with an African record of 19.46 – a time that moves the 21-year-old to fifth on the world all-time list. Bednarek got silver in 19.62 and Lyles bronze in 19.70.

Tapiwanashe Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba finished sixth and eighth respectively for Zimbabwe, the first time the nation has had two sprinters in an Olympic 200m final. They were separated by Liberia’s Joseph Fahnbulleh in seventh.

Tebogo, who finished sixth in the 100m final, adds his Olympic gold to the two world medals – 100m silver and 200m bronze – he claimed in Budapest last year.
